emily and bethany

more photos from our afternoon at BORDERS last friday in memphis. (strange, i don't think i've shot a single new photo since i got home and its nearly friday.) emily and bethany broadwater were talking outside while i photographed them. it's difficult to make people feel completely comfortable with a camera lens only inches from their face, and i'm slowly learning how to try to carry on a conversation while still shooting. its a strange experience because conversation is such an important thing to me that its difficult for me not to give it my full attention and i feel a bit silly chattering away while photographing. but, emily was a willing subject and has a pretty natural ease in front of the camera so i think i got a few good shots. this one was (obviously) converted to black and white - for some reason i just liked it better that way. i'm still not completely satisfied with digital B&W conversion, but its improving.

...

aaron, whose posts seem to get better every day (or however irregularly he posts), pulled some interesting stuff from the sufjan stevens website recently. sufjan has such a powerful way with words, and sometimes captures the struggles of the christian journey in ways that nearly bring me to tears.

and finally, a question. recently i've been trying to reduce my coffee/caffeine intake. i've read and heard a number of things lately that make me think my 4-6 cup-a-day regimen probably isn't exactly healthy. so, i've reduced it to 1-2 cups in the morning -- which is acceptable in my book. however, i find myself nearly falling asleep around 3:00 in the afternoon, and what i'm wondering is if anyone is aware of a good substitute for coffee. something thats more natural perhaps, or with at least less caffeine? i was thinking something like yerba mate, or perhaps a green tea. either way, i need some kind of pick-me-up in the afternoons and all suggestions are welcome.

Andy, this may sound too easy, but drinking a good full glass of water during that time may help. Around mid-afternoon, we usually are kind of dehyrated and therefore a little lethargic. Increasing our fluid volume can sometimes perk us right up! Plus its probably the most perfectly natural drink you could swallow...
Beautiful shot of Emily.

How much sleep are you getting each night?

Posted by: bill colrus at July 22, 2004 04:40 PM

hmm... well, actually i do drink alot of water during the day. probably a good 3-4 glasses all told. it'd probably be good to get some exercise too - maybe i should start going to the climbing gym during my lunch break.

Andy, while I lived in Chile while growing up friends would come over all of the time to drink mate. It is a really cool social phenomenon, but correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it chock full of caffiene? Wouldn't cut down on the caffiene, but makes for a cool get-together event.

Andy, try doing some lines cocaine. Coptix has that back room it'd be perfect for it. Good luck buddy!

Posted by: John Totten at July 22, 2004 04:56 PM

sleep? hmmm... 6 hours on average, 8 on a good night.

and thanks totten, that's a genius idea. i'll check out the back room.

Posted by: andy at July 22, 2004 05:00 PM

Or should that be... the crack room?

(Rim shot.)

Maybe you shoud do some Red Bull and vodka. It'll perk you up, and cure your depression to boot.

Nathan Brinkerhoff used to have a meth lab on catacombs, he's up at Moody Air School a couple hours away. I might able to get him to kick down. I'm sure he's either still producing or knows people who can hook you up, well, hook me up for you.

You don't need to be getting involved in that scene, they know I'm one loco esay so I don't have much to worry about. You, you're a loaf of white bread. Me, I'm carved outta wood.

You know, Betsy DeMarco has been warning me caffeine (among other things) is bad and ought to be curtailed in my diet. My response has mostly been to laugh & tell her in as condescending & flippant a manner I can afford to assume, and still stay reasonably shy of jeopardizing the friendship, not to take all this fearmongering about health risks of various foods so seriously. You must imagine me completely delighted to discover in one of your old entries a link to an article which suggested caffeine is not only not bad, but good for you. Whenever I come across such a resource, I email it to several interested folks, Betsy (& Jason, who's really on my side) always high on the list among them. I have to say finding that bit of ammunition on your site made me feel close to you, Andy, even though we've never met. And now you're wavering. I call this sad. I only hope it doesn't get back to Betsy by one channel or another -- I'm certainly not going to tell her anyway.

(Mt Dew, by the way, is my own coffee alternative of choice.)

Some studies have shown that one reason we're prone to nap is that our bodies reach a natural peak in their internal temperature regulation in the early afternoon. So try drinking a couple glasses of cold fluid around that time to cool yourself off. I'd recommend juice, (actual juice, not 10% crap) because it has a little jolt of sugar to pick you up but not so much that you'll crash afterwards.
And if that doesn't work, I'd recommend self-inflicted injury before turning to the side effect-strewn path of hardcore drug use. I find that nothing says "wake up" like bashing my shin into a coffee table or a swift razor slash to the abdomen.

paul - yes, sad to say, i am wavering a bit on my wholehearted support of caffeine. not because i necessarily think its unhealthy as much my dependence on it was beginning to bother me. to realize that i feel like going straight to bed at around 3 in the afternoon when i don't have coffee is a little worrisome. i suppose my hope was to find something more natural that would carry me through those hours without the jolt of 2 cups of coffee. perhaps those are foolish hopes... at the end of the day (or perhaps i should say "in the middle of the afternoon") what i probably need is more sleep and more exercise .

ben - thanks for the tip, i've asked the guys here in the office to move coffee tables around to strategic locations in the office so that i'll occasionally smack my shins into them mid-afternoon...

greg - i see bethany very occasionally, but i will relay your greetings next time we cross paths

Andy's new name will be:

"Loaf of White Bread" or "wonder bread"

Andy, I can bring my native Brazilianness into play here and confirm what "crabby" says: mate is a vonderful drink, but is absolutely cranked with caffeine.

It is a little easier on the stomach, though.

More sleep and excercise are ideal. Perhaps a lunchbreak bike ride or something. I DEFNITELY notice myself getting tired/not getting tired in proportion to how much I've slept. For me, 8 hours is great. 10 is too much. 6 is not enough.

Posted by: bill colrus at July 23, 2004 12:07 PM

You honor me too much w/ the thoughtful reply. I actually don't myself do as much caffeine as you're talking, but I like to make a show of carrying the banner sometimes because, quite simply, I adore the stuff -- coffee I mean (you know, 'like I like my women ...'), not caffeine per se. It's about loyalty. Anyway, you're probably doing the wise thing trying to work out your options and stay flexible regarding your substance use, especially where daily routine is concerned.

Posted by: Paul at July 23, 2004 07:47 PM

Also Dew. I'm a big Dew fan, and I seriously love black coffee. But it's not about the caffeine.

If Betsy sees this, there will be some very animated eye-rolling.

Andy, I don't believe we've met, but we have a mutual friend in Aaron, with whom I grew up. I visit your blog when I can because I really appreciate your work. It's elegant.

As to caffeine... I, too, realized that I was growing too dependant on the stuff this past year. Two or three 20-oz cups a day were not unheard of. I have found that I have been able to work myself back down to coffee-free days, for the most part. This was over a period of about four months. I have also found that biting the bullet in the morning is doable (genuine grapefruit juice works wonders), if I save that 12-oz mug of coffee for the afternoon.

I average 6 hours of sleep per night, but I'm sure my productivity suffers.

Try weaning yourself slowly. Try half-calf for a while, then work to 1/4 cup, etc. It's somewhat of a mind game (what isn't). Extra water does help a lot, too. I struggle like crazy w/the caffiene issue when I'm pregnant/nursing. Ugh.
