if you have been following the comments on yesterday's post, or if you heard from somewhere else, you know about brady king's fall yesterday. i still don't know too many details other than that he fell from the radisson in savannah while doing high-rise window cleaning. the grittier details can mostly be found in anna's comments yesterday, but the last i heard he's stabilized for now but has many more surgeries to come. i know that he and his family appreciate everyone's prayers and thoughts, so please keep it up. it looks like we're working on getting a card and some flowers sent over, so if you'd like to be a part of that you can contact kiko or charity (their email addresses are in the comments from yesterday); and isaac and i are talking about making a road trip to savannah in the next few weeks to see him.
for those of you who don't know brady, that's him on the left in this photo from last st. patty's day in savannah. he's one of the kindest and most genuinely enthusiastic people i know, and if past experiences are any indicator, he'll be back kite-surfing and skateboarding long before any doctor's expectations...
...
friday-mp3-of-the-week: this weeks song, old fasion morphine, comes from a fairly new singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist named jolie holland on anti records. this song reminds me distinctly of someone, but i can't figure out who - perhaps the squirrel nut zippers?
no big weekend plans, just gearing up for the week in colorado.
For those intrested in sending something to Brady: I was thinking of collecting 'notes and comments' this weekend and sending it in on Monday....so those interested, let me know by then :)...I'll hit 'the guys'' house and the Martins for sure...
Posted by: Kiko at May 21, 2004 11:54 AMokay, so rich called this am after he left the hospital. he had two surgeries yesterday. one to remove his spleen. his liver was (is?) lacerated, five broken ribs, broken leg, broken hip, pelvis broken in two places, his elbow is broken (probably will never have full mobility), and his wrist is totally shattered. he is stable but critical and still having trouble breathing. i think for most the relief he is still alive is being replaced by the reality of learning how to walk the long steps to recovery.
Posted by: Anna at May 21, 2004 12:02 PMI just talked to Carrie Galpin, and apparently he fell to the ground from the 6th floor. His head landed on his bucket, wich saved him from head injuries...which is incredible. Andy is right, he will probably be up and running before we know it...because God is good. ...we gotta keep on prayin'...
Posted by: Kiko at May 21, 2004 12:04 PMa letter(s) is good. flowers or things to the actual hospital, not so much. i think it might just give his parents something else to worry about. paul's add. is 201 w. 40th st. savannah ga 37401. but kiko, let me check the zip on that.
later on (much later on) books on cd or things like that (remember the elbow and wrist) would be great.
I am so very sorry to hear this. I don't know him, but you gave me chills. I do hope everything ends up ok for him. I'll be thinking of him. I am so sorry.
Posted by: mihow at May 21, 2004 12:47 PMLastest update on Brady:
I just talked to Anna who had heard from Rob. Brady is not doing well, again. The details are pretty vauge, but we know that Brady is in serious condition. He is having some test done today and will probably be going into surgery again soon. Anna asked that we continue to pray fervently.
Posted by: charity at May 21, 2004 02:03 PMalso: if you want updates, please don't call paul, he's very busy with all sorts of stuff right now. call ben instead.
the problem seems to be that brady's lungs are filling up with some kind of fluid and blood, which could be serious. or not. they're trying to figure out what's causing it and how serious it is.
-jerah
Posted by: jerah at May 21, 2004 03:45 PM'nother update, just in case people are only getting their news from here:
he's in stable condition now, the lung problem ended up not being his heart, as they were worried it might be.
he woke up today, was talking and making jokes. everyone is incredible relieved.
happiness all around.

Posted by: jerah at May 22, 2004 03:48 PMPlease keep the updates on Brady going here. This site is the best place for me to get info on him. Thanks, we are glad to hear is doing better.
Posted by: andyp at May 22, 2004 06:03 PMjust came from the hospital and hoorah! we have a real live walking miracle on our hands. in typical brady style he's ready to get out (though he will retire from window washing, by force if necessary...) and is testing his flexibility. when i came in he was like, hey anna, (morphine slurred) when did you get in? are you here through memorial day? i mean if i fell fifty feet i don't know if i'd recognize my mom even. thanks for all your prayers, he still has many surgeries and without a spleen is vulnerable to infection. he has been moved out of icu into a private room where we can keep secret all night vigils. love you all.
Posted by: anna at May 22, 2004 08:38 PMthanks for another update anna, it's great to hear that he's out of the woods. we're gathered up at the house on the mountain tonight thinking of you all. more prayers will be sent up, and plans to visit are in the works. please let brady know we're thinking of him.
Posted by: andy at May 22, 2004 10:38 PMwe prayed for brady today at morning services. i was chatting with the wife of the new zealand ambassador afterwards and she said that brady must, when able, to eat active raw manuka honey from new zealand. Apparently it has very distinctive anti-bacterial healing properties, particularly for internal injuries. She wanted to send some to brady, but then said she knows you can buy it in the states. she remembers a shop on the upper east side that sells it...
Posted by: nathaniel at May 23, 2004 11:22 AMFirst, thanks to all of you who are there with Brady, for keeping us updated and mostly for being there for him, while some of us can only send him our best thoughts from far away.
Second, thank you for organizing this page...it is a really great way to get information.
anna, thanks for the brady updates. everyone at swiss labri has been praying for him (and you as well). it's amazing to see the power of prayer! i'll be back in the states tomorrow...
yesterday we had a little worship service in his room. he was pretty groggy but able to know what was going on. rich read a few passages and then his mom read psalm 116 which was her psalm to read on the day he fell. check it out if you have time. we took communion and prayed for a while. beautiful. he will have surgery probably tomorrow for his hips/pelvis.
keep praying.
ana
I have just heard through "the Grapevine" about Brady's fall. He and I lived together in Bmore when he fell 18 ft during a window washing job....he was in a wheelchair for 6 weeks while recovering.....based on his attitude and strong will back then I know he'll make it through this too......please let brady know that I am thinking about him and will be sending lots of positive thoughts his way.......
Thanks,
Lauren
So that's why I didn't hear from him before the P-Funk show Friday... Wow.
Glad to hear he's already begun to recover in Brady style... Funny too that'd he'd mentioned at Vinnie's last week how liberating it would be to get out of the window-washing business...though I doubt this is how he planned to go about it...
Somebody tell him he's got more prayers elsewhere now too. :)
Posted by: Matt at May 24, 2004 01:51 PMI'll have to send him some Frosted Flakes. Hospital food is gross.
Posted by: michele at May 24, 2004 03:25 PMHi Brady, Hi Mr. & Mrs. King,
My brother let me know what happened, and I am praying for all of you. I'm far away in Hawaii, but the ocean is no barrier to love or prayer or friendship. Brady- you are so much God's creature, your heart always ready to share, your eyes always twinkling with some great plan or adventure, your mind seeking to understand... I am so glad I had the chance to know you a little through Seth, and sometimes when I feel a bit lonely because of where my own unrelenting adventure-seeking has taken me, I am inspired to remember your life's attitude. I only know one other person who is like that, and he also is one of my very favorite people in the world.
Know that you are loved and prayed for on the far shores of Hawaii,
Steph
Hi guys -
I know I haven't kept in touch with many of you...and many of you I don't know at all. But I do know Brady and love him very much and want to let you know that I am praying for him with you all. I spoke with Micah and he is doing the same.
Tad
Brady - We are praying for you here in Dallas, Tx and trusting God to knit you back together again as he knit you together in the first place. We love you and your family. Don and Sandi Holzwarth
Posted by: Don and Sandi Holzwarth at May 26, 2004 08:12 AMWe have a lot of people here in Tennessee praying for Brady. I am Kristin's aunt. We love you.
Posted by: Joanne at May 26, 2004 08:27 AMBrady- We are praying for you in Chicago. Sorry for being a long lost friend. I am excited to reconnect. Heal Brady! Love- Seth, Alexa, Micah and Ty Holzwarth
Posted by: seth holzwarth at May 26, 2004 12:26 PMBrady, I never knew anyone that was loved by so many, God knew we needed you right here, so your Guardian Angel must have been there as you fell so we could share your philosophy and love for years to come May God Bless you and help you to endure the pain until you are healed,
Posted by: Bert Varner at May 27, 2004 09:06 PMBrady,
You are constantly on our minds. We continue to pray for your rapid healing and praise God for your undamaged spirit and huge determination and heart. I am saving those three Cohiba Habana's for the time I can share a good smoke with you and your dad. All our love,
Jerry & Dorothy Gustafson (Commerce, Michigan)
Thank you all for your prayers, good memories, cards, and visits. This is the first I've been able to write and know that you are all anxious for word of Brady's condition. So I'll summarize the injuries:
pelvis which was in three parts has been surgically repaired (it takes 1000 lbs of pressure to fracture a pelvis) He now has four plates and is better now that it is more stable.
collar bone fractured
ribs broken in many places
left arm and elbow shattered and repaired - may not have full mobility there
right wrist fractured
staples down chest to abdomen where spleen was removed
a smiley scar from hip to hip where the pelvis was repaired
those "little nubbies" on each disk were broken off from the L-1 on down
Brain fine - never lost consciousness- I could hear him screaming over the cell phone as EMS lifted him for the 6 mile ride to Memorial
He had a wonderful nurse in neuro ICU who prayed with him throughout the night - and he remembered it all - said he felt so close to God
He remembered the pastors from our church praying with him - all so remarkable
He must have hit the ground at some point because his bucket and tools were so damaged, but then was hanging a few feet above the ground. Jamie, my super hero, cut him down because he was having trouble breathing. Jamie also called EMS and had the awful job of telling me. God guided him to the perfect decisions and Jamie will always have a tender place in my heart.
Doctors, nurses, and just about everyone who sees Brady are amazed at how he survived. Of course, we know how. We will never know fully how this happened, but we know surely that he did not just survive but was rescued by the Lord.
Throughout it all, from the very first moment, I had a strength and peace knowing that however this turned out, Brady would win. He couldn't lose. Even if he didn't make it physically in this world, he would be with the one who loves him even more than we do.
Funny things he has said:
Since he can't even scratch an itch, he verbally guides us in our scratchings - a little to the left, down, etc. "Now I know how a dog feels when he hopes his master scratches him in just the right spot!"
"I love it when people pray with me. I've never felt closer to the Lord"
Then he tells us funny things that the nurses say ... always using the Russian, South African or London accent of the nurse who happens to have helped him.
Continue to pray and rest assured that he is being cared for by the best: Our Loving Father, the medical professionals who minister to him, his devoted friends and family.
It seems that at this point everything that is damaged can be fixed and we just have to be patient and determined. What a beautiful gift we've been given...so much love.
One of the best parts of all this has been the opportunity I've had to meet his friends. His girlfriend, Kristen, has handled so much so beautifully. She didn't know any of us very well, and in a very short time has shared her huge heart with us all. Anyone who knows her shouldn't be surprised, and if you don't know her, rest assured that none of us could have made Brady any more joyful than she has.
His sister and brother-in-law have had to bear a tremendous burden as they have managed the house, his business, built a wheel chair ramp, all while taking care of their two children.
Brady still has a drainage tube in his chest as well as one in his abdomen. As the tubes are removed one by one, he will be progressing and transitioning to home care. The doctors feel that in three months (in a wheel chair) he will be healed. We have so many reasons to be thankful.
More in the future. I hope that soon Brady will be posting something here himself. God bless you all, faithful friends.
Posted by: Nancy King at May 29, 2004 04:41 PMOh, one more thing. So that you will recognize the enormity of all of this. He was on the roof of the Raddison (7 stories) and fell to the pool deck on the roof of the second story. It was a free fall that was stopped by a knot at the bottom. Amazing, isn't it?!
Posted by: Nancy King at May 29, 2004 05:01 PMNancy, I don't know your son, but I know several of his friends. He has been in my prayers. Both my church back home in MD and my church were I live, Memphis, is praying for him. May the peace of our Father comfort you through these many days and weeks ahead.
In Him,

Dearest Claude, Nancy and Brady, My heart was in my throat when I caught Nancy's enigmatic note yesterday.Even though the news when I reached Claude was heartbreaking,it was great to hear that he had survived albeit with dreadful injuries. As Claude put it, at least he did not suffer head or spinal cord injury and the damage can be repaired.I did read your account Nancy with tears in my eyes. Brady has a strong will to live and a great spirit for life . I know he will work with customary determination during the next months to make a comeback. Having been a friend of this wonderful family since '69, I know that they have the prayers and support of the entire community now and for the difficult months to come. Claude and Nancy, I send my love and prayers to you and our dear Brady. Ginny

Kristen leaves tomorrow. Her departure will be a sad one for all of us.
Brady,
When I heard of your fall, I felt as if it had happened to my own son. I have prayed & cried & wished I could be with you & your family, and also with Paul David. After reading these postings, I understand that you have folks all over the world who feel the same. When one member of the body hurts, the whole body hurts. My love & prayers go to you & Nancy & Claude. Even though I've walked with the Lord over 40 years, I still wonder at His ways and I don't fully understand the suffering that His people have endured. I pray that through all your suffering, you & I & many others will see the glory of the Lord. May He become your highest Treasure as you wait on His healing.
Trisha Ferris(Paul's Mom)
Brady:
Although I've never met you, the postings on this web site tell me that you're a very special guy. My wife and I are friends of Jerry and Dort Gustafson, and think the world of his kids, Kristin & Karl. Our thoughts and prayers continue for you, and all the wonderful people that you have touched. We wish you a speedy recovery.... Mike & Marilyn Niebel
Brady:
I have never met you but I feel that I know you through Paul, my brother. You are in my prayers and I look forward to meeting you someday...maybe if you come to Ben and Anna's wedding. I thank God that you are safe and I am anxious to see how He'll work in your life and in other's lives to glorify Himself through this.
Mr. and Mrs. King:
You also are in my prayers! Keep the updates coming!!
One day short of two weeks and Brady is totally unplugged!
Please continue to pray for pain management – a big issue now.
He will be making his forth move within the hospital to a rehab unit within the next several days.
Nancy,
Please tell Brady, we are still praying for him in Chattanooga.

Hey bro! It's Ross writing from Cleveland. I was heartbroken to hear of your fall. My family and I have been praying for you and I'm sure you know that the Sisters are praying for you as well. You can bet that they have the entire Convent praying for a miraculous recovery. Jon asked some students at school to keep you in their prayers and one student passed the message on to her Pastor who wanted to come and visit you. The girl came in the next day and asked where you live, when Jon told her that you live in Savannah, she said,"Well, we have a bus." I thought that was so cute. So you see, there are a lot of people pulling for you up here.
I talk to Kimberly every evening and she has been keeping me updated with how your coming along. I'm confident that you will be blessed with miraculous healing and will be up and on your feet in record time.
You are a wonderful person and friend and I look forward to getting back to Savannah soon so I can be witness to your spectacular recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. King,
You have been in our thoughts and prayers as well. Keep the faith!
Love,
Ross
FANTASTIC!!!! He will be back on the boats soon with the "Monkey Bars, what are the monkey bars?
And I am sure that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished . . . "

God Bless every one involved Love Bert
Brady, I'm sure that you don't remember me but I met you In April at Karl and Jessie's shower. Doug and I were so sorry to hear of your accident. We've been keeping in touch w/Dorothy and Kristin.I can't believe the remarkable progress that you have already made...all those prayers really DO work! How wonderful that you've been getting them from all over the country! We'll continue to keep you in our prayers...hope to see you this summer at the wedding! Sue and Doug Pretty, Allen Park, MI
Posted by: Sue Pretty at June 6, 2004 09:50 PMHi Brady,
I haven't had the pleasure of knowing you, but my Auntie, Bert Varner, is keeping me posted on your progress to recovery. My prayers are with you.
Keep hanging in there and never give up. Life is precious and you still have a chance to live a lot more of it.
Carol
Hi Nancy, Claude and Brady,
We just finished reading all the notes that people have sent to you. What a wonderful tribute to all of you and a reflection of God's love!
We just got back from adventures with Walker. Going camping with Julie next week but we'll be back the 27th. We'll have two or three weeks free before we have Lewis so we'll see you then.
God bless and know you are in our prayers,
Jane and Bonnie
Dear Brady, Nancy and Claude,
It was so good to see all of you this morning and especially Brady, alive and smiling. How amazing in our town that we had not heard of your accident until I saw the thank you's from Nancy in the IPC newsletter. We will be praying for continued recovery and as Nancy said, "Brady would win even if he had not made it," but--We are glad that Brady's days on earth will continue. We are so glad that God has healed you in such a miraculous way. Love, Linda and Charlie DePue
